ABSTRACT

During COVID-19 pandemic, there has been unprecedented increase in the number of employees working outside an organisations IT infrastructure due to the use of personal devices. The scale and sophistication of cyberattacks also continue to increase post-COVID-19 and it has become critical for SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises) to safeguard their information and IT assets. COVID19 proved to be a major catalyst for the adoption of digital approaches to remote working that many organisations did not previously believe to be feasible. The systems are becoming increasingly exposed to cyber-attacks as a result of remote access technology and cloud networks. The literature points to a gap in the existing knowledge to address the cybersecurity requirements for SMEs in India working in a virtual setup. The purpose of this paper is to develop a cybersecurity evaluation model (CSEM) that can be leveraged by SMEs which will eventually help them assess their cyber-risk portfolio. Based on the research project and the methodology used in the past for similar research, a quantitative approach will be chosen for this research. This research requires the researcher to roll out an online survey, which will enable the participants to evaluate cybersecurity risks by responding to the survey questionnaire. Analysing and implementing a CSEM will not only assist SMEs in identifying their strengths and weaknesses but will also include simple best practice guidelines for effectively plugging their cybersecurity flaws while working remotely. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to create a system dynamics simulation model to forecast the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) if some decision-making is executed to reduce the negative of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In particular, this study will focus on SMEs that belong to the furniture industry because the furniture industry is one of the leading industries in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach: The study develops a system dynamics-based model by using three subsystems, i.e. the "production subsystem,” "demand and revenue subsystem” and "raw material (or wood supply) subsystem.” Findings: The best scenario is the third scenario which increases the capacity to the normal situation and government subsidy during and after the pandemic. This scenario gives the best performance for industry revenue and gross domestic product (GDP). However, for the government, the most significant expenditure occurs in the third scenario. This seems a trade-off for the government whether to save the wooden-based furniture industry by encouraging the industry to continue operating during the pandemic accompanied by high subsidies or limiting the activities of the wooden-based furniture industry to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by providing low subsidies. Research limitations/implications: First, this study does not try to combine the system dynamics (SD) methodology with the other method or use a multi-methodology since SD has several limitations and the other method may have several advantages compared to SD. Second, the models used in this study do not consider the decline in forest area and quality. Third, the demand for wooden-based furniture is obtained from historical data on domestic and foreign sales and fourth, the model does not include the government budget as a constraint to make any subsidy to help the SMEs. Practical implications: This study provides essential insights into implementing the policies in the world pandemic situation when SMEs face lockdown policy. Social implications: The study revealed that relevant policy scenarios could be built after simulating and analyzing each scenario's effect on SMEs' performance during the pandemic. Originality/value: This study will enrich the previous study on the impact of the pandemic on SMEs and the dynamic system modeling on SMEs. The previous study discussed the pandemic's impact on SME performance and the impact's analysis in isolation from the dynamic nature of SME owners' decisions or government policy. In this study, the impact generated from the pandemic situation could be different depending on the decision and policies taken by managers from SMEs and the government. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

The paper is a conceptual study of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) technology adoption and diffusion with a focus on impact on IoT adoption during COVID-19. The paper proposes that the pandemic has acted as a legitimizing force for technology adoption and diffusion amongst SMEs. SME's have adopted response strategies to cope with the pandemic that have an impact on their propensity to adopt new technology. This has resulted in increased uncertainty, which can be reduced through the strategies identified in this paper. Through literature review on SME IoT adoption during the pandemic, a gap is identified in current studies. This gap is addressed through the inclusion of case-studies and use-cases. The paper can be used as a reference by SMEs for strategy making to reduce information uncertainty, policy makers to support SMEs as well as academicians for further research. © 2022 IEEE Computer Society. ABSTRACT

Despite their importance Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Azerbaijan and in other developed and developing countries suffer from limited access to financing due to high costs of small-scale lending, information asymmetry, high risks attributed to SMEs and collateral requirements. Thus, the lack of SME access to finance is to the large extent the consequence of weaknesses in enabling environment for finance. Shortfall in enabling environment becomes major constraint for economic growth and diversification and/or causes regionally-unbalanced growth. These deficiencies motivate government to make policy interventions toward SME financing expansion. Largely interventions come in form of credit guarantee schemes (CGS), direct lending facilities and lending by state-owned financial institutions. In turn, partial credit guarantee schemes are considered as most market friendly intervention type. There are also notable examples when countries like South Korea employed PCG as countercyclical policy tool to face difficulties came from economic downturn. The diverse and resilient SME sector is the center piece of the Azerbaijan government's strategic agenda to diversify the economy away from oil. Credit Guarantee Schemes were introduced in Azerbaijan as a measure of Government to make financing accessible for SMEs and to reduce effect of negative impact of two recent major events: the drop in worldwide oil prices and COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this paper is to review characteristics of Credit Guarantee Schemes and assess preliminary outcomes of Partial Credit Guarantee mechanism implementation in Azerbaijan. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SME) are the backbone of the economy of developed countries. Given their importance to the economy, it is necessary to analyze and study the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their activities. Hence, this research evaluates the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on the French SMEs ecosystem. We analyze the impact on the default percentage of several different economic sectors. We focus our analysis on 4 different sectors: Wholesale & retail trade, repair of motor vehicles;Construction;Manufacturing;Accommodation and food service activities. We found that the default percentage evolution is similar across the studied sectors. Furthermore, we conclude that the limited impact of Covid-19 on French SMEs can be explained by the solidarity fund implemented by the French government to reduce the economic impact of the pandemic. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the economic, technological, and sociocultural environments have been in constant change. Customers are more demanding and aware of market trends. Companies innovate their processes through the implementation of technologies that allow them to optimize operations and facilitate business-client interaction. However, many companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, face difficulties in adapting to new business models. There are even companies that are not willing to change the traditional way they carry out their daily business operations, which can present more challenges in today's market. The digital transformation has caused companies to restructure their business models in recent years. Currently, with the arrival of COVID-19, many businesses have been affected due to the lack of digitization in the processes. Small and medium-sized companies were forced to embark on E-Commerce in order to reach their customers and survive the competition. Still, not all companies have managed to properly implement a digital transformation strategy to redesign their structures and operations. In Panama there are still no studies focused on the degree of digitalization of small and medium-sized companies. This research aims to describe the degree of digitalization of local companies in the province of Chiriqui-Panama © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus at the end of 19, the competition among SMEs has become increasingly fierce. Based on their traditional management model and low level of informatization, SMEs have poor ability to cope with the impact of the epidemic and cannot quickly meet the new needs of target customers and new market opportunities. In the context of the impact of the epidemic situation, small and medium-sized enterprises need to optimize the inventory management system by introducing computer technology, use big data analysis technology to adapt to market demand, reduce the problem of enterprise inventory backlog, improve the efficiency of enterprise resource allocation, and maximize the avoidance of resource mismatch. This paper uses Java EE programming technology and the Spring Boot framework to design an enterprise inventory management system, which can comprehensively and directly display the enterprise inventory management situation, achieve data recording, storage, and modification. At the same time, it uses enterprise inventory management data to achieve the portrait analysis of target users, improve the efficiency of enterprise inventory management, optimize the enterprise management system, and quickly meet the new needs of customers. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.

ABSTRACT

The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, together with globalization and advanced technologies, has drastically changed the business environment and forced companies to become more innovative and agile in the way they run their business and respond to the needs and wants of customers. Survival highly depends on the adaptability of SMEs to this ever-changing complex dynamic environment by taking steps in implementing Big Data Analytics as the next frontier for innovation, competition, productivity, and value creation. Based on the grounded theory, this study employed a qualitative method via focus group discussion. Focus groups were conducted with 14 government agencies, SMEs associations, business owners, Chief Operating Officers (CEOs), academic and industrial experts and directors of SMEs in Malaysia. The study revealed the challenges of Malaysian SMEs in adopting Big Data Analytics Capability, presents the criticality of Big Data Analytics Capability to overcome the identified challenges, and develops a BDA Capability Ecosystem Model that integrates the internal enablers, external barriers and support to explain the adoption of BDA Capability for value creation and support the decision-making process. This paper is followed by some policy suggestions for companies' owners, policymakers, government agencies, universities, and SMEs. This study directly impacts Malaysia's economy as a whole by addressing Malaysia's Shared Prosperity Vision 2030. This research contributes to industries that are still in the low value added category with low adoption of technology. Furthermore, it will ultimately lead to the realization of SMEs as ‘game changers' to transition the economy to a high-income nation. This study proposes a model that could help SMEs improve their value creation performance, directly influencing the country's GDP and employability. © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can have significant resources, capacities, and influence in their communities, suggesting they have the potential to be agents for transformative sustainability. However, SMEs will need to move beyond firm-centered sustainable business practices towards strategic approaches that encompass and contribute to resilience-building processes. Amid the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, we explored what types of sustainable business practices of SMEs can contribute to individual, organizational, and community resilience. We identified six clusters of practice that are important in this regard. The clusters are not solely technical or "environmental” but rather illustrative of deeper sustainable values shaped by organizational structure, culture, and behavior. This paper suggests that SMEs can pursue transformative approaches to sustainability that are more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable and better able to withstand shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and can be significant contributors to community resilience. We conclude with a series of future research priorities critical to examine a largely unexplored nexus in the private sector, the linkages and dynamics between sustainability practice, resilience building, and broader community pathways. © 2022 ERP Environment and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The health sector is very specific and difficult market for firms to access and deal with. The main reasons for this is that the healthcare systems are in continuous change, the co-creation processes in hospitals are complicated involving many different actors which also affects on firms commercialization and internationalization approaches. However, there is a growing demand of health services and the sector is growing also due to the COVID situation, that has been dramatically speeding up the digitalization of the healthcare services in the hospital settings. Approaching international hospital markets is, however, challenging for the start-up companies. On their journey they are facing a resistance, that they have to overcome in many different ways. The aim of this paper is to increase understanding how a start-up can overcome hospital resistance in an international innovation co-creation process. The results of are based on in depth case study in which the data collection was done over the four years of data gathering. The paper highlights how start-up companies can overcome the resistance in the international innovation co-creation in the hospital markets. It shows the importance of different activities, actors, capabilities and international activities in different phases of the international innovation co-creation journey. © 2022

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 crisis represents significant challenges for the manufacturing industry, especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), and further emphasizes the need for supporting the fast and efficient reconfiguration and repurposing of manufacturing lines and supply networks. The European CO-VERSATILE project addresses these challenges by offering the Digital Technopole, a central hub for decentralized services, including manufacturing and supply network simulation, among other vital services in aid of the reconfiguration process. Such simulation services are provided through an external cloud-based platform, the Digital Agora (emGORA). This paper highlights how such novel cloud-based simulation services can be efficiently implemented and offered using the Digital Agora and the Digital Technopole. The presented case study aims to optimize the supply network related to the manufacturing process of silicon facemasks, involving three European SMEs. The implemented solution is offered as cloud-based service to provide scalability, convenient access and reduction of upfront costs. © 2022 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

ABSTRACT

Objective: The article aims to find out what proactive or reactive actions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) helped them survive during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study focuses specifically on how the use of public aid and the restrictions' circumvention impacted the outcomes of SMEs adjustment strategies. Research Design & Methods: Adjustment strategies of small and medium enterprises representing restau-rant, spa & beauty, fitness, and hotel industries were investigated. The interviews with business owners were analyzed using fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to present non-linear interdepend-encies between the applied measures and their outcomes. Findings: Successful adjustment strategies were contained in a spectrum of proactive actions combined with the circumvention of restrictions and the use of public aid. Strategies on the verge of survival were character-ized by reactive measures accompanied by the use of public aid. Implications & Recommendations: Proactivity significantly boosts the probability of successful survival, but it can take both legal forms and those that by design circumvent the law. Contribution & Value Added: This paper contributes to understanding the impact of public aid on adjustment strategies of small and medium-sized enterprises in the B2C sector and deepening the knowledge on the grounds of SMEs (non)compliance with restrictions. Proactive strategies can include an element of law circumvention with the simultaneous use of public aid measures. © 2022, Cracow University of Economics. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Indonesia's economic and business growth. Therefore, the government issued stimulus in tax incentives for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) taxpayers affected. However, MSMEs' participation in utilising tax incentives is still low. This study aims to investigate tax knowledge, tax socialisation, and taxpayer awareness influence on tax compliance among MSMEs taxpayers in using tax incentives. A survey with 394 MSMEs taxpayers registered in the DGT Regional Office of Aceh as respondents were performed to gather primary data. This quantitative study uses multiple linear regression as a data analysis method to test the hypothesis. The results reveal that tax knowledge, tax socialisation, and taxpayers' awareness positively affect tax incentives utilisation. Higher tax knowledge, tax socialisation, and taxpayers' awareness rate lead to higher compliance in tax incentives utilisation. These findings may help policymakers establish future tax policies emphasising tax compliance and incentives. This study also provides an overview of the tax incentive utilisation compliance of MSMEs taxpayers in Aceh Province. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Ports experienced increasing complexity over the past decades, both in terms of legal issues and increasing usage of technology. The covid-19 pandemic rose the demand for distance education as traditional classrooms are declining due to cost- and hygiene aspects. Online education contains a valuable basis for the education of staff in applied industrial settings, where safety and security (SaS) education has proven necessary but challenging to conduct. Studies have already revealed that existing SaS regulations consist of vague and confusing suggestions that often lack applicable trainings, leading port operators to conduct best practice and minimum compliance approaches. This study sheds light on a crucial research gap among online education literature, being the absence of applied quantitative evaluations. A majority of studies took place among higher education students but not in the operational field of white- and blue-collar environments. Based upon mixed-methods of qualitative and quantitative triangulation, this paper reveals critical success factors for satisfaction with online training tools and their implementation in applied industrial settings. Among the most salient results, a three-factor model is found to be significant including the lack of appropriate content, learner’s reluctance towards e-learning and learner’s general PC skills. Moreover, gender, age, and period of employment impact learner’s perception of e-learning in port operations.
